About us
A blend of nostalgia and a bright future: tatami.
People around the world have begun to realize what truly matters.
” What is the most important thing? “
While we welcome the advancements in science and technology, can we really have a good life if our planet and nature are being destroyed?
You may already know this, but tatami mats are actually an agricultural product.
Farmers cultivate rushes, just like rice, and after painstaking work, they turn them into tatami surfaces.
The Evolution of TATAMI-TO
TATAMI-TO originated from the activities of the former "Tatami-ya Dojo."
In 2007, driven by a strong desire to redefine the profession of "tatami maker," Mr. Yoshiaki Kagami established the Tatami-ya Dojo Corporation.
Our initial focus was on the raw material for tatami surfaces, which is "igusa" (rush straw). Igusa is a plant cultivated in rice paddies. In other words, the essence of tatami lies in agriculture, and there are dedicated farmers involved in its production. From this fundamental perspective of "agriculture and tatami culture," we aimed to create a nationwide network of tatami stores within the Tatami-ya Dojo organization, all striving to provide our customers with genuine domestically produced tatami.
Starting in 2009, Tatami-ya Dojo members have been visiting the production area in Yatsushiro City, Kumamoto Prefecture, three times a year. During these visits, we learn from local farmers, participating in activities such as planting and harvesting igusa, gaining firsthand experience. Additionally, we have engaged in activities like offering hand-sewn tatami as offerings at various locations in Kumamoto Prefecture, including the National Treasure Aoi Aso Shrine.
Amidst these experiences and encounters with individuals from diverse industries, the brand "TATAMI-TO" was born, transitioning from the "Tatami-ya Dojo."
We are committed to shaping the future of tatami and the role of tatami makers in new and innovative ways.
TATAMI-TO's Vision
Production Area Training
Production Area Training - Iwasaki Seminar
The Iwasaki Seminar is a training workshop held in Kumamoto, the hometown of igusa farmers. It offers a transformative experience by immersing participants in the heart of material production, which forms the foundation of craftsmanship.
Tatami shops that share a common vision come together to learn the art of "tatami" from the ground up. Participants engage in activities like planting and harvesting, while also gaining valuable insights through interactions with local igusa farmers.
The name "Iwasaki Seminar" is a tribute to Lord Iwasaki Shumetadahisa, the former lord of Kamitori Castle in Kumamoto. In 1505, Lord Iwasaki became the first person to cultivate igusa in Kumamoto.
He initiated igusa cultivation by collecting its seedlings, driven by his concern for the future of the local farming community.
The Iwasaki Shrine, located on the grounds of Kamitori Castle, honors Lord Iwasaki as the patron of igusa.
He is affectionately known as the "deity" of igusa by the local community.
